A DVD-ROM stores data files that cannot be modified, written over, or erased. A DVD-ROM can be read by a personal computer (PC) equipped with either a DVDROM or DVD-RAM drive. A DVD-ROM disc cannot be used with a DVD player connected to a television or home theater system. However, most DVD-ROM drives are capable of reading a DVD movie disk.

A DVD’s laser beam can only pass through two layers to reach the recording layer. A thin layer allows the lens focuses the beam on a smaller spot size which then creates smaller pits that can hold more data. Spiral pits are just nanometers from the data. The spiral path starts at the disc’s center and continues to coil until it reaches its outer edge. The path to the second layer of a double-layered disc is the same. Double-sided discs must be manually turned so that the path continues in the middle.
